The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) says that over 110,000 people have crossed Libya’s borders with Egypt and Tunisia, and thousands more arrive by the hour.

While many rich nations are able to evacuate their people, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres is concerned that there are no planes and boats to evacuate those from poor countries.

UNHCR spokesperson, Melissa Fleming, says that thousands of these people, who fear for their lives, can’t leave Libya.

“Many of these people are not in a position to go home. We have not seen many of these crossing borders either and particularly the Africans are calling us and calling their relatives who are transmitting this information to us that they fear for their lives if they are to even go outside because they are being associated with mercenaries and targeted.”
