Pakistan needs to invest in disaster reduction: UN

Pakistan needs to invest more to protect its future and the lives of its people from disasters.

Margareta Wahlström

That’s what the top United Nations official on disaster risk reduction, Margareta Wahlström, has said at the end of a five-day visit to the country.

Gerry Adams reports.

The damage caused by massive floods that devastated large areas of Pakistan from the north to the south is estimated at between 8.7 and $10.8 billion dollars.

That is about one-third of the government’s 2009 to 2010 budget.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction said that Pakistan cannot afford to risk its future and lives of its people by being ill-prepared.

Margareta Wahlström stressed that it is the government’s responsibility to protect its people and its leadership is needed to implement disaster risk reduction strategies.

She said the role of the international community is to support the government.
