DRC rape verdict welcomed by UN mission

The head of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has welcomed the guilty verdicts handed down this week to military personnel for rape and other human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the DRC.

  rape in the CongoThe verdicts, issued on Monday by a military court, marked the first time that a high-ranking commander and several other personnel were arrested, tried and sentenced for conflict-related sexual violence.

The officers accused received between 10 and 20 years for ordering and committing acts of rape and looting in the town of Fizi at the beginning of January of this year.  The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Margot Wallström, welcomed the verdict, saying the sentences showed that accountability for sexual violence is possible.
