The polio vaccination campaign is being coordinated by the Government of Southern Sudan, the World Health Organization and the UN Children’s fund UNICEF.

The vaccination campaign which kicks of on February 22 is designed to eliminate the polio virus which re-emerged in Southern Sudan in April 2008.

“These campaigns will continue until Southern Sudan is declared polio-free and all children are safe from polio. The polio vaccine is safe and even sick children can be vaccinated”, says Dr. Luka Monoja, Minister of Health in the Government of South Sudan.

Head of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Southern Sudan Dr. Abdi Aden Mohamed says all children under five will be vaccinated as many times as possible to protect them from the polio virus.
