That’s what the Foreign Minister of Italy, Franco Frattini, has told reporters following a UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva.

He said the European Union is aware that the Libyan government has lost control of many parts of the country following an uprising by anti-government protestors.

Mr. Frattini said it’s up to Libyans to decide their future.

“It’s up to the Libyan people to choose its destiny. It’s up to the Libyan people to decide what to do with their country, but it’s up to us, first of all, to do all what is possible to stop the violence, to condemn the regime, to isolate the Libyan regime and to help people that are in need.”

Mr. Frattini said that the United States, France, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom have discussed how to coordinate sanctions on Libya imposed by the Security Council on Saturday.
