Kosovo economic woes threat to its stability

Kosovo's financial problems could become the greatest threat to Kosovo's stability, according to Lamberto Zannier, Head of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).

UN special envoy in Kosovo - Lamberto Zannier Speaking to the UN Security Council, Lamberto Zannier said Kosovo’s economic woes might overshadow political differences as the main threat to the country’s stability.

“Kosovo can ill afford the implementation of recent campaign promises of substantial pay rises for teachers and other civil servants which the government states it intends to finance by enforcing tax revenue collection. The low-level of foreign direct investment and high un-employment are also cause for concern.”

Zannier added that members of the new government, which is due to be formed in the near future should be what he described as “clean”.

He referred to allegations of organized criminal activities, and illicit trafficking in human organs by members of the Kosovo Liberation Army in Northern Albania.
