Investing in women and girls’ education is essential to economic growth

Investing in women and girls' education is essential to a country's growth and a catalyst for empowering women.

Asha-Rose Migiro

That’s what the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Asha-Rose Migiro, has told the Commission on the Status of Women at its opening session in New York.

She said that two thirds of illiterate adults are women, and this statistic has not changed in twenty years.

“Global commitments to achieving universal primary education and gender parity at all levels of education have had a positive impact on enrolment and retention rates in many countries however the quality of education has not kept pace especially in the developing world. Many children leave school without basic literacy and n… skills. Girls and women are under-represented in science and technology, education and employment.”

Education and equal job opportunity for women are the central themes at this year’s CSW meeting which looks at the progress made toward gender equality and the advancement of women.
