The United Nations Environment Programme or UNEP has made this issue its top priority this year.

Jocelyne Sambira reports.

UNEP says massive amounts of phosphorous, a fertilizer, and uncontrolled discharges like nitrogen and sewage, poison fish stocks and undermine coastal tourism.

Plastics also absorb a range of chemicals linked to cancer and endanger the health of marine life and humans.

Environmental experts say that recycling is imperative to transforming waste and keeping the environment clean.
