The importance of preparing for disasters in order to save lives and money is being discussed at the UN General Assembly for the first time.

In 2010, more than 373 natural disasters took place across the world killing nearly 300,000 people and affecting over 200 million others.

Margareta Wahlström, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Disaster Risk Reduction says disaster preparedness is an important part of the development process.

“Let’s get the balance right. Let’s make sure we invest in sustainable development efforts, in better development practices, in disaster risk reduction and mitigation practices so that we can also not only decrease the cost of disasters but also decrease the loss of lives and the economic damage inflicted on countries.”
