After years of impunity involving military officers accused of rape in the Democratic Republic of Congo, nine soldiers including a high ranking officer, have been convicted and sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. The mass rape happened on New Year’s Day in the town of Fizi, in South Kivu. Julie Walker spoke with Margot Wallstrom, the UN’s special representative for sexual violence in conflict about the verdict.
