Civil war warning for Libya

Libya could descend into civil war unless the international community steps in.

Edward Luck

That’s according to the UN Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect.

Instability continues in the North African country as world leaders call on the Libyan head of state, Muammar Al-Qadhafi to prevent an escalation of violence against pro-democracy protestors.

The Special Adviser, Edward Luck, says Libya is at a critical turning point.

“One worries that this could become a civil war situation. One hears about clashes, violence occurring, and it’s very hard to tell from the outside given the efforts by the regime to cut off communication with the outside, exactly what is happening, but if the government is importing mercenaries from other countries who presumably care less about the populations of Libya than normal soldiers would, they may be more and appear to be more ready to use violence against unarmed protesters”
