Africa's patent applications are low: WIPO

Applications for new international patents have increased in 2010 but Africa’s share is still low.

Patents are sole rights granted to inventors for the ownership of their inventions.

The latest World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) patent report shows that only South Africa, Egypt and Namibia have made any significant patent applications.

Patrick Maigua asked WIPO director General Francis Gurry why the continent is lagging behind in this field.
