25,000 people displaced by military operations in Pakistan

Approximately 25,000 people have been displaced by the latest military operations against insurgents in the Mohmand agency of north-west Pakistan's tribal areas, according to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR).

UNHCR camp in Pakistan

The agency has established two new camps for people fleeing the Sagi and Dewazai areas since military operations intensified at the end of January.

UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards says the camps are the first to be created within the tribal areas since military operations against insurgents began in 2008.

“Over the last few days, UNHCR has registered some 25,000 people displaced as a result of fresh military operations against insurgents in Mohmand agency of north-west Pakistan’s tribal areas. With the fighting intensifying we estimate that up to 90,000 people could be displaced by the end of February.”
