"Winds of change blowing" in Africa: Ban Ki-moon

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said the "winds of change" are blowing across Africa where he said people are becoming empowered through elections and economic transformation.

United Nations Secretary-General Speaking at a summit of the African Union in Ethiopia, he said economic growth was “the new narrative for Africa”.

He called upon African nations to put special focus on three areas in their development efforts; women, youth, and the private sector.

In a wide-ranging speech he also called for support for the establishment of an inclusive interim government in Tunisia.

Civil unrest forced Tunisia’s president to flee the country earlier this month as people took to the streets in often violent protests.

Mr. Ban also urged restraint and the respect of human rights in Egypt, which has also been hit by political unrest.
