UNICEF supports over one million people affected by Sri Lanka floods

Five days of non-stop heavy rain have turned parts of Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean near India, into a disaster area. Official reports say some 23 people have died and more than 300,000 have been displaced.

The displacements have happened just as many people were beginning to rebuild their lives after years of conflict and the 2004 Indonesian tsunami.

UNICEF’s Mervyn Fletcher spoke to UN Radio’s Gerry Adams about the flooding, for which an appeal will soon be launched.
