UNAMID’s role in the troubled region of Darfur is to facilitate humanitarian access as well as protect the civilian population.

Ibrahim Gambari, the Joint AU-UN Special Representative says the work of the peacekeepers should not be hindered.

“We have got our job cut out for us. We are going to be more robust. We are also signalling to the government that we will not be seeking permission to do our work because the status of our agreement so far provides for us to have free movement to do our work. And we intend to go ahead and do so.”
