• As the political impasse continues in Côte d’Ivoire, the United Nations has warned of the possibility of genocide in the West African country. Edward Luck, the UN Special Advisor on the Responsibility to Protect, says that crimes against humanity, war crimes and ethnic cleansing could be  precursors to actual genocide.

•An estimated 25,000 people from Cote d’Ivoire have crossed into neighbouring Liberia. More than 600 continue to arrive every day, according to UNHCR. The majority are women and children who  are now living in already crowded and impoverished villages.

Africa rebounds from global economic slowdown

• Economies in Africa are rebounding strongly from the global economic slowdown. The continent’s economy is expected to grow by around 5% this year. Rob Vos, co-author of the “World Economic Situation and Prospects” report says the bigger business and the bigger farmers will be the main gainers from this process.

Urgent action is needed to avert the possibility of genocide, in Côte d'Ivoire according to a senior United Nations official.

The Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Francis Deng said he is particularly disturbed by allegations that the armed forces and militia groups that back opposing camps in the current political crisis are recruiting and arming ethnic groups.

He said genocide was a real threat.

“We remain gravely concerned about the possibility of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and ethnic cleansing in Côte d’Ivoire. We believe that urgent steps should be taken in line with the responsibility to protect to avert the risk of genocide and to ensure the protection of all those at risk of mass atrocities.”
