UN Human Rights Chief reminds Ivorian leaders of obligation to protect civilians

Political and military leaders in Côte d'Ivoire are being reminded of their obligation to protect civilians.

The security situation in the country continues to deteriorate following the disputed presidential elections in November.

The UN Human Rights High Commissioner Navi Pillay has written individually to a group of leaders, including incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo in what she called “key authority positions.”

The UN Human Rights Chief said her office had received reports of at least two mass graves, although UN investigation teams have been denied access to the sites.
