In his message, the Secretary-General said that on 12 January 2010 Haiti suffered a disaster of unparalleled magnitude with the government losing thousands of civil servants and the country much of its key infrastructure.

Mr. Ban reiterated the full commitment of the United Nations to support Haiti in meeting the challenges of reconstruction and building a safe, prosperous, and secure future for all of its citizens.

The Secretary-General will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the United Nations headquarters later in the day to mark the first anniversary of the earthquake.

The United Nations lost 102 of its staff in the earthquake.
