UN brands sexual violence in Côte d’Ivoire “political”

The authorities in Côte d'Ivoire has been called on to investigate what have been described as politically motivated rapes that have occurred during the post-election crisis which is gripping the West African nation.

The country has been in turmoil since the incumbent president, Laurent Gbagbo, refused to concede defeat to opposition leader Alassane Ouattara.

The crisis has been marked by a growing number of violent incidents against civilians, especially women.

The United Nations envoy on sexual violence in conflict, Margot Wallström said the assaults against women follow what she called “carefully selected political targeting”.
