Sudanese authorities have been urged by the United Nations children's agency (UNICEF) to pay particular attention to the well-being of children.

The call comes as the people of Southern Sudan enter the third day of voting in a referendum on the independence for the region.

Some children have been separated from their parents as many people moved from the north to participate in the referendum in the south.

UNICEF spokesperson Marixie Mercado says children are particularly vulnerable during population movements.

“UNICEF reiterates its call on authorities in the north and the south to place special emphasis on the monitoring and protection of separated and unaccompanied children and reunifying them with their families. To date, 57 children have been registered as separated with their families. UNICEF has supported the Ministry of Social Development in reunifying or re-establishing communication with families for 51 children and tracing and monitoring is under way for six.”
