According to the United Nations humanitarian agency (OCHA) there are an estimated 800,000 people living in over 1,000 settlements and camps.

OCHA spokesperson, Elisabeth Byrs says that the situation for the displaced people has improved with approximately 150,000 relocated to transitional shelters.

“We have also assessed more than 388,000 houses and many people were able to return to their homes with quite safer conditions. The problem is that there is lack of land in and around Port-au-Prince and we have this problem of the land tenure which is quite complex to solve. And that’s why also it was difficult to find land to build new shelters.”
