Push to save DRC’s natural world heritage sites

Silverback Gorilla in DRC are being over-hunted

Conservationists are looking at how to preserve five areas of natural beauty in the Democratic Republic of Congo which are on a United Nations danger list of world heritage sites.

The five sites include Virunga, Garamba, Kahuzi-Biega, and Salonga National Parks, and the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, which are home to a unique range of flora and fauna including the Mountain Gorilla and the Okapi.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is meeting Congolese government officials in the DRC capital Kinshasa this week, to try and strengthen protection of the sites.

Guy Debonnet is from UNESCO. Daniel Dickinson asked him about the sites.
