Around four billion x-ray procedures are conducted on humans throughout the world every year; the use of CT scanning, in particular, has grown dramatically in recent years. These procedures are a vital tool for doctors, but sometimes used inappropriately. Experts at the International Atomic Energy Agency or IAEA are looking at ways of ensuring patients are protected from unnecessary exposure to radiation. They’ve developed a tracking system known as the “Smart Card/SmartRadTrack Project”. The IAEA’s Louise Potterton spoke to Dr Donald Frush from Duke Medical Center in the USA, who’s working on the project.
