Over 20 people reportedly killed in Abyei

As voting continues in the referendum in Southern Sudan, 20 people have been reportedly killed in the oil-rich region of Abyei.

Referendum in Southern Sudan

It follows fighting between the Arab nomadic Misseriya people and members of the Ngok Dinka ethnic group.

Abyei was meant to hold a concurrent referendum on whether to join the North or South of Sudan but an agreement on the modalities for the vote was not reached.

A hurriedly called meeting between Abyei and South Kordofan security committees, which included traditional leaders, discussed the current situation and the recent clashes.

Chief of Abyei Administration, Deng Arop Kuol, made this statement.

“We have agreed also that the two parties, and especially the leaders from Ngok and the Misseriya should begin to cease hostile, you know, kind of statements being given to the media.”
