Following a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed said eradicating Islamic extremism, specifically the Al-Shabaab insurgents in the capital Mogadishu and the rest of the country was a top priority.

He added that the people of Somalia are facing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

“Nearly 2.5 million are on the verge of starvation and unless we will have immediate support, international support, definitely there will be a catastrophic situation in Somalia. So we ask the international community to immediately reach, hopefully, these starving people.”
