Callixte Mbarushimana, from the Democratic forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) was surrendered to the Court in The Hague by French judicial authorities.

He is accused of having committed crimes against humanity and war crimes in the territory of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Prosecutor of the ICC, Luis Moreno Ocampo explains the charges against Mr. Mbarushimana.

“We are charging Mbarushimana for the crimes committed in 2009 and 2010 and his role was not ordering the crimes. His role was, he was part of the top leaders of the FDLR, coordinating their activities but he was specifically in charge of political negotiations to convince and force Rwanda to accept this group inside Rwanda. In some way it’s a first case for us in which we present not a case against the top leader.”

The ICC issued a warrant of arrest against him on 28 September 2010 and Mr. Mbarushimana was apprehended on 11 October 2010.
