Laurent Gbagbo “must stand aside” in Côte d’Ivoire: Ban Ki-moon

Laurent Gbagbo has again been urged by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to step down and allow Alassane Ouattara to take over as the recognized elected president of Côte d'Ivoire.

In his first press conference this year the Secretary-General expressed concern about the blockade by forces loyal to Mr. Gbagbo of Golf Hotel which is serving as the headquarters of Mr. Ouattara.

Mr. Ban also said that attempts to prevent the UN mission from carrying out its duties in the country are unacceptable.

“As I have said before, I say again. The facts on the ground are indisputable. Côte d’Ivoire has a legitimately elected president- Alassane Ouattara. The previous incumbent, Laurent Gbagbo, must stand aside. I m deeply concerned by the deteriorating political and security situation especially the growing number of violent incidents targeting civilians and the United Nations mission.”
