Nine claimants are being paid a total of $680 million by the commission that settles damage claims in connection with Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

This latest round of payments brings the total amount of compensation disbursed by the Geneva-based UN Compensation Commission (UNCC) to nearly $31.4 billion.

The claims have been made by individuals, corporations, governments and international organizations which lost property or money as a result of the invasion.

The compensation payments have come from the sale of Iraqi petroleum under the so-called Oil-for-Food programme, which came to an end in 2003.
