Joint UN-African Union mission in Niger to promote democracy

A joint United Nations-African Union mission has arrived in Niamey, Niger to assess the transition to democracy following last year's coup and a recent wave of arrests.

The United Nations is represented by Said Djinnit the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa.

He was accompanied by the vice-president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union commissioner for peace and security.

Martin Nersiky, the spokesman for United Nations Secretary-General has more.

“Djinnit’s office says that the delegation will express the support of the UN, AU and ECOWAS to the transition process in Niger. They will also assess progress and remaining challenges in the effort to restore constitutional order, including the organization of the elections. The joint delegation is scheduled to meet the national authorities and institutions, as well as presidential candidates and members of the international community in Niamey.”
