Independent panel to determine source of cholera in Haiti

An independent panel of four experts has been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon to determine the source of the 2010 cholera outbreak in Haiti.

In December, Mr. Ban announced his intention to appoint the panel amidst claims that UN peacekeepers in the Caribbean country may have been the source of the outbreak. Yvette Morris of the United Nations Office in Geneva has more.

“The panel will review all of the information and data available to date and travel to Haiti to conduct investigations on the ground. The panel will operate completely independently from the United Nations. It will have access to all UN records, reports, facilities, and staff members as required. It will present a written report of its findings to the Secretary-General and to the Government of Haiti.”
