Holocaust victims remembered
The victims of the Holocaust, in which millions of Jews were murdered, are being remembered today.
In a message on Holocaust Remembrance Day the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, has paid special tribute to the women who were persecuted and murdered by the Nazis.
Daniel Dickinson reports
The 27th of January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest and most notorious of the Nazi death camps in Germany.
Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorates the millions of Jews, as well as the prisoners of war, political dissidents, and members of minority groups who were systematically murdered by the Nazis.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, has paid special tribute to the women who suffered.
He said despite appalling acts of cruelty, they consistently found ways to fight back against their persecutors.
He added that the UN would work to create a world where such atrocities can never be repeated….a future he said that has “yet to arrive”.
