From fighting poverty to building safer world, UN chief outlines priorities for 2011

Fighting poverty and building a safer world are part of eight strategic priorities for the United Nations this year outlined by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

These priorities include, sustainable development, climate change the empowerment of women, nuclear disarmament , the strengthening of the Organization from within as well as human rights and accountability.

The Secretary-General told reporters that the UN will also improve its response to major humanitarian crises.

Mr. Ban said the UN will also prepare for its Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio plus 20 scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2012.

“During the year ahead, we will emphasize sustainable development as we work towards Rio+20. We will also give special focus to the needs of the most vulnerable, wherever they may be. The United Nations conference on the least developed countries, which will be held in Istanbul in May this year, will be an important occasion to recommit ourselves to these issues.”
