Food prices continue to increase across the world: FAO

International cereal prices continued to increase in the first half of December, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

In its Crop Prospects and Food Situation report, FAO says that prices of wheat and maize were about 50 per cent higher than a year ago.

FAO points out that rice prices have strengthened in recent months but are still below the level of a year earlier.

It says that what will happen in the prices for the remainder the 2010/2011 marketing season will depend greatly on prospects for 2011 cereal crops.

Poor countries without enough food will import less cereal in 2010/2011 but their import bill is forecast to increase by 11 per cent because of higher international prices.
