Chinese authorities are urged to investigate death of a journalist

Chinese authorities have been urged by the head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to probe the death of Chinese journalist Sun Hongjie. Hongjie worked as a senior reporter for the Beijing Chenbao newspaper. Charles Appel reports.

Sun Hongjie reportedly died of head injuries in a hospital in Kuitun City in the north-western province of Xinjiang on 28 December last year.

The journalist was reportedly attacked on the night of 18 December by a group of six people at a construction site where he had an appointment to meet a source.

Ms. Bokova says that in view of the nature of the attack, she is calling on the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into this crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.
