Call to end impunity for Somali pirates

Impunity for pirates operating off the coast of Somalia should be tackled by supporting their prosecution in the Horn of Africa country according to a senior United Nations adviser.

Jack Lang, the UN Special Adviser on legal issues has called for assisting the regions of Puntland and Somaliland to arrest and prosecute pirates.

Mr. Lang pointed to the weaknesses in the current efforts to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia.

“Nine out of ten pirates captured by our navies have to be released because there is no effective acceptance of states for prosecuting pirates. So impunity is a predominant feeling. Nine out of ten are released because no jurisdiction is prepared to prosecute them.”
