The UN Food and Agriculture Programme (FAO), says the matches, to be played in Doha, Qatar, are part of a partnership agreement it signed with the Confederation.

Daniel Dickinson reports.

During the matches soccer fans are being urged to sign an online petition calling on governments to give priority to the elimination of hunger.

The campaign is expected to mobilize donations for FAO’s TeleFood initiative which provides poor farmers with tools to grow crops, as well as raise livestock and fish.

Since it was started in 1997, the TeleFood project has provided over $9 million to finance more than 1,000 projects in over 100 countries.

The first match to be dedicated to the fight against hunger is the opening match of the Asian Cup to be played on 7 January between Qatar and Uzbekistan.
