African migrants drown in Gulf of Aden

piracy in Somalia

An estimated 40 Ethiopian and Somali migrants have drowned after their boat capsized in the Gulf of Aden.

A second boat carrying migrants is reportedly missing in rough seas off the coast of Yemen.

Chronic poverty, as well as economic and political instability in the Horn of Africa is pushing migrants to pay smugglers large sums of money to undertake the hazardous sea crossing.

Patrick Maigua spoke to Jean-Philippe Chauzy from the International Organization for Migration.

He asked him what happened.

In cue: As far as we know, we are still uncertain….
Out cue: impoverished families that are left back home.
