23,000 Ivorians cross into Liberia

Up to 23,000 people from Côte d'Ivoire have crossed into Liberia as the political stalemate continues in their country.

Ivorian refugees in Liberia

According to the United Nations refugee agency, (UNHCR) at least 500 Ivorian refugees are arriving in Liberia each day.

UNHCR spokesperson, Melissa Fleming, says that her agency and the World Food Programme are planning a major food distribution to the refugees next week.

“They are still coming at about 500 a day and now the number is 23,000 refugees. They are still being accommodated in the villages and this is becoming a very difficult situation. We announced a few days ago that we are about to establish a refugee camp. We are awaiting the final approval of that camp but we have already planned the site and have established all the infrastructural items that we need to rapidly get that camp up and running.”
