OSCE urged to support transition in Afghanistan
The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has been urged by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to help ensure that the transition to democracy in Afghanistan is sustainable and irreversible.
Speaking at the OSCE summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, he said the situation in Afghanistan is a test for international collaboration.
The Secretary-General called for long-term commitments to train the people of Afghanistan and build their institutions.
“The United Nations would welcome greater OSCE involvement in supporting Afghan national programmes and priorities. For our part, we are planning to launch a Regional Programme for Afghanistan and Neighbouring Countries early next year. It will foster cross-border cooperation to counter 21st century transnational threats of drug trafficking and organized crime.”
