North Korea is urged to allow verification of nuclear programme
North Korea has been urged by the head of the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano to allow verification of its nuclear programme.
The IAEA’s General Conference and the Security Council have adopted resolutions calling on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to do so and to stop its nuclear weapons programme.
Speaking in Vienna, Mr. Amano expressed concern about recent reports of a new uranium facility and the construction of a light water reactor in North Korea where the agency has not had inspectors since April last year.
“I urge the DPRK to fully implement all of the relevant resolutions of the General Conference and the Security Council. As the only multilateral organization for nuclear verification, the IAEA has an essential role to play in verifying the DPRK’s nuclear programme.”
