A new partnership between the UN and academic institutions, known as the United Nations Academic Impact, has been launched in New York. A concert to celebrate the occasion was held and once again the General Assembly hall echoed with music.

The concert was sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the UN in partnership with the China Symphony Development Foundation.
Under-Secretary-General Kiyo Akasaka of the Department of Public Information was behind the initiative and also master of ceremonies. So now for your listening pleasure, the Asia Pacific United Orchestra in this piece Vltava by Smetana.

A UNICEF programme helps lift children out of the workforce and into the classroom

Extreme poverty is keeping up to eight million children in India out of school. These youngsters often are working in hard labour or as domestic workers to help support their families. But an innovative learning system supported by UNICEF is giving them a chance to join their colleagues at school. Dianne Penn reports.

The use and production of landmines as well as the number of people killed by these weapons has declined to record levels. The 2010 Landmine Monitor report says only one country, Myanmar, is now confirmed to use landmines. Dianne Penn reports.
