Three weeks after unusually heavy monsoon rains caused severe flooding in Pakistan, residents continue to struggle. Senior UN officials talk about the level of devastation in the country and describe what they saw when they visited the country.

The United Nations which already has operations in Pakistan has been on the scene since the monsoon rains lead to devastating floods starting in late July 29th. Martin Mogwanja is leading the UN’s humanitarian efforts in Pakistan and he says the floods represent the worst natural disaster in Pakistan’s history.

On August 19th Secretary-General Ban and the Government of Pakistan hosted a special session of the General Assembly to draw the international community’s attention to the on-going needs in the country. The Secretary-General said this disaster is like few the world has ever seen before, adding it requires a response to match.
