Getting Ready and Getting it Right: the Census in Indonesia (part 1)

Census in Indonesia

“Everybody Counts” is the theme of this year’s World Population Day. In 2010 dozens of countries are taking part in the current round of Censuses. The UN is on the ground in many of these places, helping officials in the count, as they collect and manage data. One of those places is Indonesia. Its census, conducted in May, covered more than 200 million people living on 17,000 islands. Along with details of births and deaths, this year’s census for the first time is collecting information on Internet access, as well as maternal mortality and disability. Reporter Rebecca Henschke followed preparations for the census on the streets of the capital – Jakarta.
