The UN Security Council has approved a new round of sanctions against Iran over its suspected nuclear programme

On June 9th, the Security Council voted to impose a fourth round of United Nations sanctions against Iran, while demanding that the country suspend its enrichment activities and peacefully resolve outstanding concerns over the nature of its nuclear programme. The resolution was adopted by a vote of 12 in favour to two against – Brazil and Turkey – and one abstention, Lebanon. UN Radio’s Donn Bobb reports.

An estimated one million Afghan refugees live in Iran, says UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, most having arrived decades ago. They live primarily in cities and support their families by doing work Iranians have little interest in – building, farming, collecting garbage. 

Young people voice their opinions for World Environment Day

Although officially, World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5, this year, the day became a weekend celebration when on June 4th, the UN Environment Programme, UNEP, held a videoconference linking high school and university students with their peers in Africa and the Middle East. The students discussed climate change, climate justice and the economics of energy during the day-long event, which was jointly sponsored by UNEP, the UN Department of Public Information and the British Council. UN Radio’s Gerry Adams spoke to some of the participants and asked them why climate change was so important to them.
