Mayors for Peace speak out for nuclear disarmament

At the Second United Nations Special Session on Disarmament held at UN Headquarters in New York in 1982, the Mayor of Hiroshima proposed a new Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities toward the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. This proposal offered cities a way to transcend national borders and work together to press for nuclear abolition. Subsequently, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki called on mayors around the world to support this program. The organization “The Mayors for Peace” later emerged. Composed of cities around the world that have formally expressed support for the program, the Mayors for Peace membership as of May 2010, stood at nearly 4,000 cities in 143 countries and regions.
On the second day of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Conference taking place at the UN, the Mayors for Peace met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to reaffirm their common commitment to the cause of nuclear disarmament. Billy George Regan, a European member of Mayors for Peace, says he got involved in the disarmament movement at a time when the Cold War was in full swing:
