New Zealand Announces Support of Indigenous Rights Declaration

More than 2,000 participants from across the globe are in New York for the latest session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. During the opening ceremony, New Zealand announced it will now support the 2007 Declaration on the Rights of the Indigenous People. The country had previously voted against the Declaration, together with Australia, Canada and the United States. Dr. Pita Sharples, Minister for Māori Affairs, says the decision “represents an opportunity to acknowledge and restate the special cultural and historical position of Māori as the original inhabitants of New Zealand.”

Asia is home to the majority of the world’s indigenous people. Representatives from regional groups at the indigenous forum underway at UN Headquarters met to address challenges they are facing including conflict, tribal land displacement, and integrating culture and development. Chandra Roy of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) explains how the Bangkok-based Regional Initiative on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Development  (RIPP) helps facilitate dialogue and cooperation between governments and the indigenous.

Hanoi Conference Addresses Challenges of Bird Flu

Health authorities are meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam, to review the global response to bird flu. Countries have worked hard to control the spread of H5N1, the virus which causes bird flu. Dr. David Nabarro, Senior UN System Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza, characterizes this action as “an extraordinarily good example of governments working together to tackle an emerging issue.”
