On December 10, 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights stated for the first time that all human beings were born equal in dignity and rights. With more multi-ethnic and multi-cultural societies, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay is asking the world to embrace diversity and end discrimination – starting with herself.

December 3rd was the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. There are an estimated 650 million people with disabilities worldwide, or 10 per cent of the global population. Approximately two thirds live in developing countries. In most parts of the world, there are deep and persistent negative stereotypes and prejudices against persons with certain conditions and differences. Alison Schafer of the World Bank describes how the Bank is attempting to change those prejudices in Pakistan.
