UN officials have weighed in on the controversy surrounding the dismissal of the UN Deputy Representative in Afghanistan, Peter Galbraith, over allegations he made of electoral fraud. Bissera Kostova reports.

Typhoon Melor, nature’s latest strike on the Asia region, hit Japan October 7 with heavy rains and winds of about 100 miles per hour. It is just one of many. Referring to Typhoon Ketsana, which hit the Philippines , a tsunami, which struck Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga, and massive earthquakes which hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra, UN Under-Secretary-General Noeleen Heyzer said of the recent disasters to hit Asia, “It is almost unprecedented for any region to experience so many disasters over such a short period of time.” Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes, in his second update following the ongoing crises, says this is a bad time for the Asian region:

Pacific island nations produce the lowest carbon emissions in the world, yet they are expected to suffer some of the worst consequences of climate change. For many Pacific residents, the worsening effects of climate change will not mean the inconvenience of a hotter summer or more intense rainfall, but the end to life as they know it. Typhoons Ketsana and Parma have killed or injured hundreds of people in the Philippines. But a flash flood in Quezon City, on the outskirts of Manila, the capital, has also affected many. One of them, Marita, spoke to Gerry Adams.
