Afghanistan works toward free and fair elections

With the acceptance by President Hamid Karzai of a second round of voting in Afghanistan’s presidential elections, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has pledged UN support to ensure those elections take place in a “free, fair, transparent and secure environment”. UN Radio’s Diane Bailey reports.

The International Women’s Media Foundation Courage in Journalism Award recognizes the bravery of women journalists who often risk political persecution, physical injury and even death in their efforts to expose corruption and champion human rights. Four women were honoured with the IWMF Courage in Journalism Award this year — Iryna Khalip of Belarus, Agnes Taile of Cameroon, Amira Hass of Israel, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award and Jila Baniyaghoob of Iran, whose life story we focus on today.

The growth of nuclear energy in the 21st century

Two thousand eight was a somewhat paradoxical year for nuclear power, according to Mohammad El-Baradei, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA. It was the first year since 1955, he says, in which not a single new power reactor came on line. But 2008 also saw construction start on no fewer than 10 new reactors, most of them in Asia.
